I’m REALLY into this whole producing thing. While the engineering thing is okay, I have to admit that recording is a lot more like naughty film industry…..it’s a lot more fun to actually be in the action (as opposed to just being the guy holding the microphone). I love working a song over from top to bottom. I love ripping a song apart and putting it back together. I love pushing musicians to perform better than they have ever performed before. I love taking the necessary time to get a GREAT performance out of a singer.
The Good
However, the results are often very exciting and the type of thing that you can be proud of for years to come. For people interested in advancing to the next level, going with real deal production is the best / fastest way to make the album that people will hopefully want to buy. For people into the “major label” type of production, this is often the way to get it. (There are exceptions)
The Bad
The bad news is this type of recording takes A LOT of time, energy, money, blood, sweat, and tears. In order to justify the means there must be some kind of end. In other words, there is no point to working on an album for months and months just to print up 50 cds for friends and family. An album of this magnitude requires a dedication that must extend well past the recording process and into the artwork, the marketing, the playing of shows, etc.
